How we work
Chasing one issue at a time means more downtime and more trips. Our process is built to get everything on the table upfront so your car spends less time in the shop and more time on the road.
Comprehensive inspection first
We always recommend starting with a full inspection before any work begins. We'd rather find everything now than surprise you with something new six weeks later. JDM vehicles have quirks — we know what to look for.
Scope the whole job, then order
Once we know what your car needs, we get all the parts on order at once. No waiting on one fix and then discovering the next — we plan ahead so the work flows and your schedule doesn't get dragged out.
OEM parts, sourced from Japan when it matters
We source OEM parts whenever possible. That sometimes means ordering direct from Japan — because the right part for your car isn't always sitting on a shelf in the US. It's worth the wait. We won't cut corners on parts just to save a few days.
Knock it all out when parts arrive
When everything is in, we schedule your service and complete the work in one focused visit. Fewer appointments, less disruption — and a car that comes back to you properly sorted.
A note on timing: Parts from Japan can take longer than your local auto parts store — and that's intentional. We'd rather get the right part than settle for a substitute that'll have you back on the lift in six months.
Mattie and the ToyBox crew are very knowledgeable and friendly. I had found ToyBox before pulling the trigger on a Sambar as I wanted to make sure there was someone in the Austin area who would be able to work on it.After purchase, I had Mattie run through everything to evaluate what was needed to make sure it was in good shape before putting it on the road. Everything from new seals, timing belt, water pump, CV boots, spark plugs and more.Since then, I’ve asked Mattie to do some additional work like an LED conversion, some electrical work to wire up a speedometer, and some other random things.I couldn’t recommend ToyBox more!

"Mattie at Toybox is amazing! I bought a kei van without knowing anything about them or having any mechanical skills of my own. Mattie did a very thorough inspection of the van and walked me through everything needed to keep her running smooth. He's done a good amount of work for me with quick turnaround and always reasonably priced. With the growing popularity of kei vehicles, Austin is lucky to have Toybox!"

This place rocks. I took my newly purchased Pajero Mini for an inspection and to say Mattie did a thorough job would only begin to cover the amount of time and energy he dedicated to making sure my car was ready to ride these Texas roads. He made sure to communicate the work that was needed in detail, prioritizing safety. Incredibly honest and fair assessment, and he really worked hard to be able to get my car back in my hands as soon as possible. I look forward to working with him for any and all of my Pajeros needs - and you should too!

Importing a Japanese K-car is exciting but seriously stressful, from figuring out the process to discovering the lack of maintenance most of these cars come with. Luckily, Mattie knows these cars inside and out. He does top-tier work at unbeatable prices, is super responsive, and clearly passionate about what he does.If you’ve joined the K-car community, you can relax knowing Mattie’s got everything you need to keep your new toy running perfectly. Genuine guy, amazing service, and hands-down the best resource around for imports!

Mattie is a skilled and honest technician. He has a near monopoly on this kind of service and could take advantage of this position, but instead he communicates clearly, keeps his services affordable, and is honest and realistic with setting expectations. He’s a class act, and a chill and friendly fella. My ‘97 Acty had a failing AC. I was honest with him about how much I could afford to pay for a fix and he got it working much better on a budget, by tuning up everything he could without a major overhaul. He was honest when he told me how long it would take and how much it would cost to get it back to 100% and I was able to opt for the cheaper quicker fix without waiting for parts etc.

Mattie is the man! Not everyone knows how to work on these rigs so finding someone to trust is tough but had no hesitation with Mattie. They working quickly to get it back to me and the quality of the work was top notch. Highly recommend!
